| Jamie Green 1959 - 2009 It is with great sadness that T. Nielson and Company have to announce the death of one of their key members of staff, Jamie Green. Jamie joined the company in 1991 and served a four-year apprenticeship to become a shipwright. He brought with him his immense knowledge of seamanship and rigging having previously had a career sailing with Square Sail and The Jubilee Sailing Trust. In addition to being a shipwright, Jamie's responsibilities included all dry dockings, crane lifts, rigging and First Aid. His love of sailing always remained, and he was never happier than when sailing his own boat, Lady Nancy, together with his family. Jamie's enthusiasm, cheerfulness and willingness to share his knowledge, made an enormous contribution to our team. He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues and by those who knew him. |

| Take cover! Winter
is coming... At the moment, four of our client’s vessels are tucked up under covers for deck work or painting. The 45’ trawler yacht Nordic Star is undergoing a major refit of interior accommodation, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as re-fastening and re-caulking of the deck. Halcyon, the 95’ LOA ketch rigged classic yacht is in the large dry dock at the moment. The planned work schedule includes, painting topsides, varnishing deck furniture, masts and spars and a number of other jobs in preparation for next year's charter season. For information see www.halcyonyachtcharter.com Topsail schooner Johanna Lucretia, which has been 'left' in Gloucester Docks for several years in an increasingly poor condition, has now been sold. Amongst the work T. Nielsen & Co has been asked to carry out for the new owner, is the complete re-caulking of the deck. On the hard standing, we are working on the 50’ 1962 Fred Parker designed sloop Majala. While moored at a marina pontoon on Elba in Italy, she was in a collision with an out of control car ferry. The ferry won. Amongst the work we are carrying out is: caulking under water hull, replacing damaged deck planks and painting topsides. |

| Narrow Boats
for sale After having carried out extensive repairs to the 72’ timber narrow boat Gort (bow last year and stern this year), we've come to the conclusion that it's possible to build competitive narrow boats from timber rather than steel. A timber constructed boat has many advantages over steel: • Timber is naturally insulating and will not require spray foam or other insulation • Timber is sound insulating and the boat is quieter when sailing • If maintained correctly, a timber vessel has a longer expected life than a steel vessel • The inside of the timber hull is a feature of the interior accommodation and eliminates the need for lining and panelling and can greatly reduce the fit out cost • It can be built almost entirely from local sustainable materials (English oak and elm) For further information about this project, cost estimates etc., please contact our office |

| Gort leaves our
Yard The 72 feet long timber narrow boat Gort has just left the Yard after we have replaced the stem, fore deck and some hull planks, as well as caulked the hull and re-painted the decks and cabin. The owner has taken Gort, which was build in 1939 by Nursers at Braunston, for an autumn cruise on the Midlands canals and we expect to see her again next spring for further work to the stern. | The Halcyon outing Recently the owner of yacht Halcyon very generously made the vessel available for a long weekend company 'outing'. Five from T Nielsen & Co took up the offer and we had a great weekend sailing in the Solent and round Isle of Wight. The first day in force 5 to 6 wind, we stayed in the Solent and with 2 reefs in the mainsail touched 11 knots speed. The second day was warm, calm and sunny and we spent the day sailing round The Island with every scrap of sail set. www.halcyonyachtcharter.com |

| Institution of Civil Engineers Award The Company has been awarded a prize by the Institution of Civil Engineers for the wooden swing bridges at Diglis Basin in Worcester. These were designed by architects Arup for British Waterways and the contract to build them from Morrison Construction Ltd. Close teamwork allowed innovation in combining 3D computer analysis of complex moving structures and the traditional skills of the yard to build the bridges. www.ice-westmidlands.org.uk |

| Qualifications Dominic Mills and Nigel Patrick have both completed CAD level 3 and passed with distinctions. Tommi and Barney Smart had a hard act to follow; but have both passed. Level 2 CAD with credits. The design team are putting their skills to plenty of use. |

| Pilot Cutter Olga returns
to our Yard The Pilot Cutter Olga owned by Swansea Maritime Museum has been awarded a grant to have the deck and some deck beams replaced as well as bringing the deck layout back to the original deck plan. The project will also include a complete new suite of sails, after the 50 year old flax main sail “expired” in a squall off the Mumbles this summer. Olga has been delivered to Gloucester and we plan to start this work within the next month. |

| Rebuilding bridges The Company has been awarded the maintenance contract for the wooden toll bridge built in 1774 across river Wye at Witney near Hay on Wye. A team of shipwrights has just started to replace decking and some of the structural greenheart timber support beams and diagonal bracing. |

Gloucester Tall Ship Festival After a very successful Tall Ship Festival in Gloucester from 26th – 28th October we have docked the brig Phoenix in our large dry dock for planned maintenance work. The festival was attended by many “old friends” – Earl of Pembroke, Kathleen and May, Ruth, Phoenix, Olga and Mascotte; as well as approximately twenty thousand visitors. T. Nielsen & Co opened the “pilot cutter shed” to the public and several thousand people admired Cornubia under rebuild, as well as the newly built pilot cutter replica Kochi, which was built in Cochin in India and shipped to Gloucester for completion. |
